Former ROC (Taiwan) Vice President Chen Chien-jen and his wife Lo Fong-ping departed Nov. 15 on a six-day visit to EU member states Poland and Lithuania, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the Poland leg of the trip, Chen will meet with Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation officials and participate in the unveiling of a plaque recognizing Taiwan’s ABF donations. Upon arriving in Lithuania, he is scheduled to deliver a keynote address “Taiwan as a Litmus Case for Democracy” during the Future of Democracy forum Nov. 20 in capital Vilnius.
Participating at the invitation of Lithuania Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, Chen will detail Taiwan’s democratic achievements, as well as well as the country’s successful experiences in combating COVID-19 and managing hybrid warfare and disinformation threats.
Organized by Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two-day dialogue seeks to build a consensus among like-minded partners on responding to reduced democratic space and authoritarian entrenchment. Another notable participant is Uzra Zeya, U.S. undersecretary of state for civilian security, democracy and human rights.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Former Vice President Chen is visiting the #EU! He’ll attend a ceremony at Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation in #Poland & give a keynote on #Taiwan’s democracy at the invitation of @GLandsbergis during the High-Level Forum on Defending Against Authoritarianism in #Lithuania.”
