Foreign Minister Wu, European parliamentarians meet

2021/11/02

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu met with Taiwan-friendly parliamentarians from Belgium and the European Parliament during his recent trip to Europe, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oct. 30.

The group shared a cordial meeting in which they discussed an array of issues at the heart of Taiwan-EU relations, as well as ways of expanding cooperation between like-minded partners such as bilateral investment agreement negotiations, the MOFA said.

Wu also took the opportunity to thank the EP on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan for adopting the Taiwan-EU Political Relations and Cooperation report in a landslide vote. The report urges the EU to intensify political relations between the two sides and support the country’s international participation, he added.

Among the high-profile attendees were Charlie Weimers, Swedish member of the European Parliament who is also the rapporteur of the Taiwan-EU Political Relations and Cooperation report; as well as MEPs and MPs from 8 other EU member states, including two co-chairs of the Belgium-Taiwan Friendship Group.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Rewarding meeting between Minister Wu & friends from @Europarl_En, @DeKamerBE & @SenaatSenat. The group discussed issues like the urgency of starting #Taiwan-#EU bilateral investment agreement negotiations & need for the country's @UN system inclusion. Taiwan is not alone!”
