Taiwan’s trade, investment tour of Slovakia, Czechia, Lithuania gets underway

2021/10/22

Taiwan’s trade and investment tour of Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Lithuania got underway Oct. 20, reaffirming the government’s commitment to deepening economic ties with like-minded partners worldwide.

Organized by the National Development Council in conjunction with the Ministries of Economic and Foreign Affairs, Finance as well as Science and Technology, the nine-day trip involves a 66-strong delegation led by NDC Minister Kung Ming-hsin.

Members include officials and representatives from business associations, research organizations and industries such as biotechnology, finance, green energy, information and communication technology, precision machinery and tourism.

The itinerary includes visits to related agencies and businesses in the three EU member states. Subsequent discussions are expected to encompass issues like business matchmaking, investment opportunities and supply chain cooperation.
According to the MOFA, relations between Taiwan and the three European nations are going from strength to strength. This is evidenced by their donations of COVID-19 vaccine doses to the country this year, underscoring the strong friendship shared by the democratic partners during a challenging time.

The country’s firms have a strong presence in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, the MOFA said. This serves as a solid base for growing Taiwan’s business footprint in the European market, with greater cooperation anticipated going forward after Taiwan and Lithuania establish respective representative offices by year-end, the ministry added.

As the world heads toward the post-pandemic recovery, building diversified, resilient and sustainable supply chains is even more important, the MOFA said. The tour paves the way for the democratic partners to strengthen the global economic bounceback and help deliver inclusive prosperity, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “All systems go for #Taiwan’s trade & investment tour of #Slovakia, #CzechRepublic & #Lithuania! NDC Minister Kung is leading a 66-strong group on the 9-day #EU visit. Main goals? Tap post-pandemic opportunities & forge resilient supply chains for the democratic world.”
