Strong support for Taiwan contained in the U.S. Department of State press release issued Oct. 3 is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of the country, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Beijing is urged to end military, diplomatic and economic pressure and coercion against Taiwan, the State Department said. The U.S. has an abiding interest in peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and will continue assisting Taiwan in maintaining a sufficient self-defense capability, the State Department added.
This commitment to Taiwan is rock-solid and contributes to the maintenance of peace and stability across the strait and regionally, the State Department said. The U.S. maintains its long-standing commitments as per the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances and will continue to stand with friends and allies in advancing shared prosperity, security and values in the Indo-Pacific, as well as the deepening of ties with democratic Taiwan, the State Department added.
Issued in light of China’s increasing provocative military activity near Taiwan, the release highlights the importance the U.S. government places on safeguarding Taiwan’s defense and security, as well as cross-strait peace and stability, the MOFA said.
The government will continue promoting Taiwan-U.S. cooperation and exchanges across the board as part of efforts enhancing relations between the like-minded partners, the ministry added.
In a tweet on the MOFA’s official account, the ministry said “Our sincere appreciation to @StateDeptSpox for the strong remarks. We thank the #US for its rock-solid support of #Taiwan in the face of China's pressure & coercion, as well as maintaining commitments under the Taiwan Relations Act & Six Assurances.”
