2021/10/04
Activities marking the centennial of the Taiwanese Cultural Association are underway around the country, according to the Ministry of Culture Sept. 30.
Co-organized by the MOC and the Taipei City-based General Association of Chinese Culture, the yearlong event is themed around “a century of pursuit,” involving exhibitions of artworks, historical documents and love letters; film screenings; and musical performances, which are staged by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in central Taiwan’s Taichung City; the National Museum of Taiwan History and the National Museum of Taiwan Literature in southern Taiwan’s Tainan City; the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute in Taipei City; and the Taipei and Kaohsiung Music Centers.
Among these events is an exhibition titled “New Cultural Perspectives: One Hundred Years of Taiwanese Music” staged by the National Center for Traditional Arts at Zhongshan Hall in Taipei City. Running from Sept. 30 to Nov. 7, the exhibition displays photos and song recordings from the past 100 years, according to the MOC.
Deputy Culture Minister Hsiao Tsung-huang said during the opening ceremony that the establishment of the TCA has played a key role in Taiwan’s musical and social development. This is evidenced by a song lyric composed by the association founder Chiang Wei-shui, expressing his pursuit of political freedom during the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945), he added.
According to the MOC, many non-governmental organizations, such as the Association for Taiwan Literature in Taipei and the Lai Ho Cultural Foundation in central Taiwan’s Changhua County, have also held commemorative activities.
The Taiwanese Cultural Association was initially established in 1921 by Chiang in Taipei as a force for promoting local culture during the era of Japanese rule.
