MOFA thanks US for backing Taiwan-Lithuania ties

Staunch support from the U.S. for the expansion of Taiwan-Lithuania ties is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Sept. 16.
 
The statement follows a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Lithuania Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis a day earlier in Washington, underscoring ironclad U.S. solidarity with the European Union member state in the face of attempted coercion from China.
 
Further proof of global backing for Lithuania came from U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan during a call to Lithuania Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte Sept. 13, while Slovenia PM Janez Jansa—whose country is the current holder of the EU presidency—sent a letter to European Council members stressing Taiwan’s importance as a partner.
 
According to the MOFA, democracies around the world are coming together to safeguard the right to freely exchange with one another. Lithuania has proven it will not back down in its determination to grow relations with Taiwan through The Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania despite authoritarian threats, the ministry said, adding the government will spare no efforts to work with Lithuania in safeguarding the universal values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law.
 
In a tweet on the MOFA’s official Twitter account, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said: “Appreciate @SecBlinken’s support for front-line democracies. I’m inspired by @GLandsbergis’ wisdom & courage to work with #Taiwan. We'll take real actions to cooperate with #Lithuania in trade, investment & supply chains.”
