President Tsai vows to make Taiwan integral part of space technology supply chains

President Tsai Ing-wen vowed to place space technology at the heart of Taiwan’s industrial development plans through enhanced academia-industry-government collaboration Sep. 14, underscoring the government’s commitment to cementing the country’s position in global supply chains.
 
According to Tsai, the pledge is in lockstep with the objectives of the six core strategic industries initiative. It will help secure Taiwan’s technological leadership, while capitalizing on business opportunities such as the launch of low-orbit satellites, she added.
 
The president made the remarks during a visit to the National Space Organization in Hsinchu City, northern Taiwan.
 
Space development is one of the government’s top priorities, Tsai said, adding her administration is leaving no stone unturned in this regard, as demonstrated by the passing of the Space Development Act and a plan to invest US$906.62 million in the space sector over the next decade.
 
Other officials in attendance during the visit included Hsinchu Mayor Lin Chih-chien, National Applied Research Laboratories President Wu Kuang-chong and Minister of Science and Technology Wu Tsung-tsong.
 
Unveiled by President Tsai Ing-wen during her inauguration address in May 2020, the six core strategic industries comprise the information and digital technology; cybersecurity; biotech and medical technology; national defense; green and renewable energy; and strategic stockpile industries.
