Taiwan launches campaign in New York for UN bid

An international campaign promoting Taiwan’s bid to participate in the activities, mechanisms and meetings of the U.N. as a key partner in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals was launched by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York in the U.S. city.
 
Unveiled ahead of the 76th U.N. General Assembly commencing Sept. 14, the initiative showcases the country’s contributions to stimulating global economic recovery and sustainable development to help equip the world for a prosperous post COVID-19 era, the ministry said.
 
According to the MOFA, one of the highlights of the campaign is a website calling on people around the world to show their support by lighting a virtual sky lantern and leaving a message expressing why Taiwan should be given a voice at the U.N.
 
To reaffirm the government’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to people displaced by war in the Middle East, the TECO in New York is organizing the Road to a More Resilient Future: Sustainable Support for Syrian Refugees conference Sept. 16, the MOFA said.
 
The event will be moderated by Betul Yuruk, Anadolu Agency’s U.N. and New York foreign correspondent, with participants including Inga Rhonda King, permanent representative of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to the U.N., and Paul Beresford-Hill, permanent observer of the Sovereign Order of the Malta to the U.N.
 
Equally important is the Taiwan-U.S. Development Partnership Dialogue-Financing for Green, Resilient and Inclusive Development conference. Set to take place Sept. 22, the event will also be streamed via YouTube, the ministry said.
 
Involving experts and officials from agencies such as Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission, Taipei City-headquartered International Cooperation and Development Fund (Taiwan ICDF), the U.S. Department of the Treasury and U.S. Agency for International Development, the conference will focus on how participating countries can work together for a more sustainable future, the MOFA said.
 
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “The 76th @UN General Assembly opens Sept. 14. Taiwan is shut out on political grounds. Take 3 steps & join the call to give #Taiwan a voice at #UNGA76!”
