Foreign Minister Wu gives exclusive Der Standard interview

2021/09/06

Taiwan is committed to bolstering its defense capabilities while enhancing cooperation with like-minded partners to oppose authoritarian expansionism, according to Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu.

Faced with ever-increasing military provocation from China, Taiwan’s government will continue enhancing its strategic partnerships with countries around the world in order to maintain cross-strait peace and stability, Wu said.

Wu made the remarks during an exclusive virtual interview with Manuel Escher for an article published in Austria-based daily newspaper Der Standard Sep. 2.

According to Wu, the goal of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is now shared by the international community, including Japan, the European Union and the U.S.

Taiwan and Austria share the fundamental values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, Wu said, adding that democracies must stick together to tackle the threat of hybrid warfare and disinformation while safeguarding shared values.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Minister Wu gives a good interview to @derStandardat. Learn about Taiwan & #EU member states facing the threat of #China's authoritarianism, implications of the #US withdrawal from #Afghanistan & the need for democracies to support #Lithuania as it develops ties with #Taiwan.”
