Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu called Belize Prime Minister John Briceno Sept. 2 to convey the government and people of Taiwan’s heartiest congratulations on the Central America ally’s 40th anniversary of independence.
 
Belize is one of the country’s key regional partners, Wu said. The government will continue working tirelessly to implement mutually beneficial cooperation projects aimed at advancing the well-being of the people, he added.
 
At the same time, Wu said, the government will keep assisting Belize in its efforts to combat COVID-19 so as to ensure the ally remains on the road to post-pandemic economic recovery.
 
Wu also thanked Briceno for Belize’s long-term backing of Taiwan’s international participation. It is sincerely hoped this rock-solid support continues going forward, he said, extending an invitation to the prime minister to visit the country once the pandemic subsides.
 
Briceno, in response, expressed his gratitude for Taiwan’s commitment to strengthening Belize’s coronavirus response and promoting sustainable development via a host of cooperation projects. The government and people of Belize will maintain friendly ties with Taiwan while strengthening bilateral collaboration across the board, he added.
 
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said “It was Minister Wu’s honor & privilege to call @JohnBricenoBZE & congratulate him on #Belize’s 40th anniversary of independence. He also thanked the PM for the #CentralAmerica ally’s support of #Taiwan’s international space, & vowed to keep strengthening bilateral relations.”
 
According to the MOFA, Taiwan and Belize enjoy a strong partnership in fields spanning agriculture, education, fisheries, information and communication technology, infrastructure development and medical care. The countries have concluded various cooperation pacts over the past several years pertaining to anti-corruption, aviation, economy, good governance and mutual legal assistance.
