2021/08/26
Four Taiwan-produced short films are set to be screened online Aug. 25-Sept. 2 as part of the 2021 SeaShorts Film Festival organized by Malaysia-based SeaShorts Film Society with support from Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia.
According to the MOC, the lineup will be screened under the No Home Movies category in partnership with the Golden Harvest Awards, Taiwan’s longest running short film festival.
Among these, “Pulang,” directed by Yam Kin Wai, depicts the challenges faced by a young transnational couple, while “Before and After” by Han Hsiu Yu examines the life of a Vietnamese bride in Taiwan through her internal monologue.
“Remigrate” by Hu Ching-chuan is an experimental piece that uses 3D scanning technology to bring to life the childhood memories of the director’s mother, while “There” by Wu Yufen explores the relationship between an Indonesian caregiver and her patient’s family.
Founded in 2017 by award-winning Malaysian filmmaker Tan Chui Mui, the annual SeaShorts Film Festival aims to deepen appreciation and understanding of Southeast Asia’s diverse cultures while promoting cultural exchanges in the region. It was held in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Malacca in Malaysia before switching to an all-online format due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
The fifth edition features 60 shorts from Taiwan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, as well as competitions, exhibitions, forums and workshops.
