32nd Golden Melody Awards honors stars of Taiwan popular music

The 32nd Golden Melody Awards for Popular Music was held Aug. 21 in Taipei City, spotlighting the outstanding achievements of Taiwan’s musical talents.
Organized by the Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development under the Ministry of Culture, the awards saw 27 prizes presented to local artists and groups drawn from among nearly 1,500 submissions.
Rapper Soft Lipa was the biggest winner of the night, earning best male singer in the Mandarin language while also taking home best Mandarin album for “Home Cookin’” and best music video for the same-titled single.
Another success story was Hebe Tien, who picked up the award for best female singer in the Mandarin language. Her album “Time Will Tell” earned best album producer for Chen Jien-chi, while her song “Untold” won best lyricist for David Ke.
Other recipients included singer-songwriter Crowd Lu, who bagged song of the year for 2020’s “Your Name Engraved Herein,” and singer-songwriter Lo Ta-yu, who was recognized with a special contribution award for his almost five decades in the music industry.
Launched in 1990, the GMA are Taiwan’s equivalent of the Grammys. The awards were divided into two classifications in 2007 to separate prizes for achievements in popular music from those for traditional arts.
