President Tsai Ing-wen presented the Paralympic flag to Taiwan’s team for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Aug. 21 in Taipei City, urging the athletes to go for gold and represent the country with courage and honor.

The story behind each athlete is truly inspirational, the president said. Such determination and sacrifice for the chance to stand tall for the country on the international sporting stage is sincerely appreciated, she added.

Tsai made the remarks during a special ceremony in Taipei City. Others in attendance included Minister of Education Pan Wen-chung and Taiwan’s Paralympic Committee President Mu Ming-chu, who is leading the country’s delegation to the games taking place Aug. 24 to Sept. 5.

Athletes to keep a close eye on are Cheng Ming-chih, a top-ranked men’s table tennis star; Liu Ya-Ting, a javelin thrower who has won seven golds in Taiwan’s National Disabled Games; and Yang Chuan-hui, a second-time Paralympian competing in the men’s long jump, Tsai said. They have the support of the people, and all eyes will be on them as they look to climb the podium at the games, she added.

According to the Sports Administration under the Ministry of Education, 10 Taiwan athletes will contest six sports at the Paralympics, namely badminton, judo, powerlifting, swimming, table tennis and track and field.
