Taiwan is committed to deepening its academic and cultural ties with the Czech Republic through the Taiwan-Europe Connectivity Scholarship program, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aug. 19.
Springboarding off the success of the historic visit to Taiwan by a delegation headed by Czech Senate President Milos Vystrcil, the scholarship program was first launched for Czech students by the MOFA and seven local universities last year. To date, 19 participants have enrolled through the initiative at Fu Jen Catholic University in New Taipei City, National Chengchi University in Taipei City and National Sun Yat-sen University in the southern city of Kaohsiung, the ministry said.
A pre-trip briefing for recipients of the scholarship was hosted by Vystrcil Aug. 19 in Prague, the MOFA said. Attendees of the event included Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, who joined virtually, and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Prague head Ke Liang-ruey.
During the briefing, Wu said he hoped the students would become a bridge of friendship between the two countries while deepening mutual understanding and expanding cooperation.
Vystrcil led the 89-member delegation from the Czech Republic to Taiwan last year. The trip resulted in the signing of three memoranda of understanding on cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence, smart machinery and startups.
