President Tsai addresses JCI Asia-Pacific Conference

2021/08/23

President Tsai Ing-wen delivered an opening address for the Junior Chamber International Asia-Pacific Conference Aug. 19, highlighting the importance of fresh thinking and innovation in building a more prosperous post-pandemic world.

The innovation and vitality of young entrepreneurs is a key driver of socioeconomic development, Tsai said. JCI members stand at the forefront of this new era shaped by COVID-19 and its challenges, she added.

It is hoped that through a greater focus on personal development and social responsibility, Tsai said, JCI will continue promoting economic recovery and supporting disadvantaged communities while inspiring innovative ideas aimed at forging a sustainable future.

According to Tsai, JCI’s commitment to enhanced living, positive change and social welfare is in line with the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. There is international consensus on realizing the SDGs, and they remain at the heart of the government’s policymaking platform, she said.

As part of public and private sector efforts encouraging more businesses in Taiwan to incorporate the SDGs into their operations, Tsai said Taipei-headquartered Alliance for Sustainable Development Goals is making a significant contribution.

ASDG-staged events like the Global Corporate Sustainability Awards and Global Corporate Sustainability Forum, the largest of its kind in Asia, are playing a key role in this process, Tsai said. JCI is also an important partner for Taiwan in this mission, she added.

Themed Rise and Shine, Our Promising Future, the four-day conference is staged virtually from Taichung City in central Taiwan by JCI Culture City—a local chapter of the U.S.-based nonprofit organization. It involves more than 4,000 participants from 21 countries and territories, and features business networking and cultural events, debating and speaking competitions, training sessions and workshops.
