Icyang Parod, minister of the Cabinet-level Council of Indigenous Peoples, met with Australian Office Taipei Representative Jenny Bloomfield Aug. 18 in New Taipei City, spotlighting the government’s commitment to fostering ties between the two sides’ indigenous communities.
In a statement, the CIP said Icyang Parod presented Bloomfield with a traditional shoulder bag of the Amis people as a gesture of welcome. Stressing the importance of preserving indigenous languages, the Australian representative took the initiative to learn the Amis word for the item, the statement added.
According to the minister, Bloomfield has demonstrated a deep commitment to advancing dialogue on indigenous affairs, as evidenced by her public statements highlighting key issues facing indigenous populations in both countries and her participation in this year’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day event organized by the CIP.
Echoing Icyang Parod’s sentiments, Bloomfiled took the opportunity to thank the minister for the warm reception and gift of an indigenous-grown mixed vegetable box, adding that she looks forward to visiting the farming communities and witnessing the launch of their e-commerce platform for specialty local produce.
Both sides agreed to expand existing bilateral exchanges spanning areas such arts and culture to other sectors, including language, economy and trade, the minister said. Further cooperation between the two countries, specifically with the National Indigenous Australians Agency, is also underway, he added.
