President Tsai Ing-wen conveyed her condolences on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan to Haiti following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake affecting an area 150 kilometers west of capital Port-au-Prince Aug. 15.
According to the Presidential Office, Taiwan stands with its Caribbean ally at this time of great tragedy. The government will donate US$500,000 to assist with Haiti's post-disaster reconstruction, while local rescue teams stand ready for dispatch if required, the PO added.
Shortly after the tremblor, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu called Haitian counterpart Claude Joseph to offer his sincere sympathies. Gu Wen-jiann, ROC (Taiwan) ambassador to Haiti, also expressed his care and concern to Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
The PO said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the country’s embassy in Haiti will keep a close eye on related developments and offer assistance if necessary. No ROC (Taiwan) nationals have been reported injured or missing to date, the PO added.
According to the MOFA, Haiti is a key regional ally of Taiwan and the countries enjoy solid and close relations since establishing official ties 65 years ago. It is sincerely hoped life will quickly return to normal in Haiti as soon as possible, the ministry added.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “The government & people of Taiwan extend their deepest condolences to Haiti following the magnitude 7.2 quake affecting the south & southwest of the country. @Tw_Haiti is coordinating with local officials, & we’ll keep liaising with @pennayiti & monitoring the situation closely.”
