Taiwan, US, Japan, Australia stage GCTF virtual conference on green energy

2021/08/16

A virtual conference on green energy was held under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework Aug. 11 in Taipei City, spotlighting the government’s commitment to achieving the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals while promoting cooperation with like-minded partners around the world.

Jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bureau of Energy under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Hsinchu County-based Industrial Technology Research Institute in northern Taiwan, American Institute in Taiwan, Australian Office Taipei and Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, the one-day workshop marked the first time a renewable energy-themed event has been hosted under the GCTF.

High-profile participants included MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, BOE Director General Yu Cheng-wei, AIT Director Sandra Oudkirk, AOT Rep. Jenny Bloomfield; and JTEA Chief Rep. Izumi Hiroyasu. A further 120 officials and experts from 50 countries and territories also took part in the workshop.

During his address, Wu said the conference would serve as a platform for participants to exchange experiences and formulate measures to combat climate change. For its part, the government will continue building Taiwan into one of Asia’s leading green energy hubs on the back of the five-plus-two innovative industries plan, he added.

The five-plus-two innovative industries plan fosters the development of the biotech and pharmaceutical, green energy, national defense, smart machinery and Internet of Things sectors, as well as the circular economy and a new paradigm for agricultural development.

Echoing Wu’s remarks, Oudkirk said the workshop builds upon the long-standing tradition of energy cooperation between Taiwan and the U.S. Together, the two sides can make vital contributions to the global economic recovery while meeting growing energy demands in a sustainable way, she added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Forces for good #Taiwan, the #US, #Japan & #Australia held a #GCTF #GreenEnergy workshop. Minister Wu, AIT Dir. Oudkirk, JTEA Rep. Izumi & @AusOfficeTPE Rep. Bloomfield opened the event in which experts from 50 countries made real headway on charting a sustainable future.”

Since its launch in June 2015, the GCTF has seen more than 1,900 experts, officials and representatives from 77 countries and territories participating in over 30 workshops covering topics such as disaster relief, energy security, law enforcement, media literacy, public health and women’s empowerment.
