President Tsai Ing-wen received Australian Office Taipei Representative Jenny Bloomfield Aug. 12 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City, pledging to expand bilateral cooperation across a broad spectrum of areas.
According to Tsai, Taiwan and Australia are like-minded partners that share the same universal values and are mutually committed to maintaining security and promoting prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
The president thanked Australia for staunchly supporting Taiwan’s international participation. Canberra’s active role in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue demonstrates the importance the country places on peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, she said.
The two countries also share a thriving trade relationship, as evidenced by the steady annual increase of around 10 percent over the past five years, the president said, adding that Taiwan looks forward to working together to strengthen the resilience of regional supply chains while advancing sustainable economic recovery.
Tsai welcomed further opportunities to deepen bilateral ties, particularly negotiations on an economic cooperation agreement. Such a pact would facilitate a new chapter in Taiwan-Australia cooperation, she said.
This year marks the Australian Office’s 40th anniversary, the president said. Since its establishment, the two countries have made significant progress in areas spanning educational exchanges, technology and cybersecurity, as well as trade and investment, she added.
