President Tsai Ing-wen praised Taiwan’s progress in promoting women’s empowerment and housing justice while making the country a freer and safer place for women and girls Aug. 11.
Great strides have been made by local nongovernmental organizations in providing support to women leaving violent relationships, Tsai said, citing efforts by the Garden of Hope Foundation (GOH) based in New Taipei City as an example.
The foundation offers financial and legal aid as well as professional training to support women and girls, helping put a stop to the cycle of abuse and enabling survivors to take charge of their lives, she added.
Tsai made the remarks during her opening address at the annual Asian Conference of Women’s Shelters. Co-organized by GOH and Asian Network of Women’s Shelters, the two-day virtual event involves officials and representatives of nongovernmental organizations from countries and territories such as South Korea, the Netherlands and the U.S.
According to Tsai, housing justice is critically important to building better tomorrows for all. The government will continue expanding access to affordable, high-quality housing to reduce the burden on victims of abuse and disadvantaged groups, she said.
Established in 1988, GOH is a nonprofit group aiming to help disadvantaged girls and women, especially those involved in the sex industry and survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking or sexual abuse.
