Vice President Lai Ching-te vowed to promote Taiwan’s film and television industry at home and abroad Aug. 10, underscoring the government’s commitment to sharing the country’s diverse stories with audiences around the world.
Calling the new show “Seqalu: Formosa 1867” an epic historical drama the likes of which has never been seen in Taiwan television, Lai said such moving portrayals of past events can help society become more inclusive. The 12-episode miniseries produced by the Public Television Service tells the story of a military confrontation between the U.S. Navy and a multiethnic community in present-day Hengchun Peninsula in southern Taiwan.
According to Lai, locally produced historical dramas can help facilitate a deeper understanding of the country’s past while bolstering social cohesion by solidifying a shared identity among viewers.
Lai made the remarks while attending the series premiere in Taipei City. The drama is adapted from Chen Yao-chang’s novel “Lady Butterfly of Formosa”.
Other high-profile attendees at the event included Hsiao Tsung-huang, deputy minister of culture; Tchen Yu-chiou, chairperson of Taiwan PTS Foundation and Taiwan Broadcasting System; and Ting Hsiao-ching, chairperson of Taiwan Creative Content Agency.
The vice president took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the Ministry of Culture and TBS for their support, as well as Director Tsao Jui-yuan and the cast members for their dedication and hard work in making the series a reality.
