MOFA Minister Wu calls SVG PM Gonsalves, wishes him speedy recovery

2021/08/10

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu called Ralph Gonsalves, prime minister of Caribbean ally St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Aug. 6 to wish him a speedy recovery on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan.

Gonsalves suffered a head injury after being struck by a projectile during a demonstration. He was later flown to nearby Barbados for medical treatment, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the call, Wu conveyed sincere concern on behalf of President Tsai Ing-wen. In response, Gonsalves thanked Wu for the warm regards, later posting on his official Facebook page that he is doing well and on the mend.

Wu said Taiwan and St. Vincent and the Grenadines are like-minded partners sharing the same democratic values. Both countries respect the right of the people to freedom of expression but stand together in strongly condemning acts of violence, he added.

The pair also took the opportunity to exchange congratulatory messages prior to Taiwan and St. Vincent and the Grenadines celebrating 40 years of diplomatic relations Aug. 15, the MOFA said, adding that the allies will continue deepening friendship and expanding exchanges for the benefit of the people.

In a tweet on the MOFA’s official Twitter account, Wu said “Good talk with @ComradeRalph. The prime minister of #StVincentAndTheGrenadines is a real battler & won’t let anything keep him down. All of #Taiwan wishes the country’s dear friend the very best & a quick recovery.”
