2021/08/06

Taiwan is committed to bolstering its defensive capabilities while deepening cooperation with like-minded partners to safeguard freedom and democracy in the Indo-Pacific, according to Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu.

Faced with ever-increasing military provocation from China, Taiwan’s government will continue enhancing its strategic partnerships with countries around the world in order to maintain cross-strait peace and stability, Wu said.

Wu made the remarks during an exclusive virtual interview with Matthias Koch published by Germany-based news network Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland Aug. 3.

According to Wu, Taiwan and Germany share the fundamental values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, as evidenced by the latter’s active participation in enhancing security in the region via the Carbis Bay communique issued by leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized nations, the Brussels summit communique issued by NATO and the deployment of a frigate to the South China Sea as per the European country’s Indo-Pacific guidelines.

The goal of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is now shared by the international community, Wu said, adding that Taiwan is willing to engage with China based on the principles of peace, reciprocity, democracy and dialogue, the minister added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Minister Wu talks topical #Taiwan issues in a big interview with @KochMatthias. Learn about government efforts to check #China's campaign of coercion against the country, preserve cross-strait peace & stability & growing global focus on #SouthChinaSea security.”
