Taiwan is willing and able to work with Israel in combating cyberattacks and disinformation while strengthening global cooperation in related areas, according to Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and Digital Minister Audrey Tang.
In an op-ed published July 26 by The Jerusalem Post, Wu and Tang said Taiwan faces around 30 million cyberattacks per month. These include repeated attempts to infiltrate the county’s major petroleum and semiconductor companies, with many originating from China.
Taiwan is also inundated with disinformation from abroad since the onset of COVID-19, Wu and Tang said, adding that an estimated 25 percent of pandemic-related material is suspected as having come from the other side of the Taiwan Strait.
According to Wu and Tang, this virulent campaign aims to destabilize Taiwan’s democracy, society and government institutions. The free world must pay close attention to Taiwan’s experiences and prepare themselves accordingly, they added.
Taiwan is successfully sharing valuable lessons with other like-minded countries around the globe, Wu and Tang said, citing examples such as a cybersecurity forum and regional workshops on promoting disinformation response strategies, media literacy and network security staged with the U.S. under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework.
Wu and Tang said Taiwan is deeply impressed by Israel Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s initiative to form a global cybersecurity network. Addressing common threats together enhances the security and resiliency of all democracies, they added.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, Wu said “Cyberattacks & disinformation are threatening democracies worldwide. @audreyt & I are of one mind in our @JPostOpinion piece. It’s time for like-minded partners #Taiwan & #Israel to form an unbreakable knot & crush the tools of authoritarianism.”
