The first upgraded Tuo Jiang-class stealth corvette, Ta Jiang, was handed over to the ROC (Taiwan) Navy July 27, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s territorial waters, according to the Military News Agency.
The successful development of the corvette marks a new milestone in Taiwan’s naval capacity and demonstrates the fruitful results of the domestic shipbuilding program, Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng said. It also reflects the navy’s determination to spare no effort in defending the country, he added.
Chiu made the remarks during an official delivery ceremony held at the facilities of Lungteh Shipbuilding Co. in Suao Township of Yilan County, northeastern Taiwan.
Other high-profile attendees at the ceremony were Legislators Chen Ou-po and Wang Ting-yu as well as Yilan County Mayor Lin Zi-miao.
As commander in chief of Taiwan’s armed forces, President Tsai ing-wen named the warship after Tawa River in the southeastern county of Taitung, which is inhabited by the courageous Paiwan people, Chiu said, adding that the country’s men and women in uniform can be inspired by the example set by members of the indigenous tribe.
The minister added that the geographical feature familiar to all in Taiwan also serves as a reminder to every officer and soldier that they stand on the front line of safeguarding the country’s democracy and freedom.
