Team Taiwan won four gold medals to finish first along with China at the 32nd International Biology Olympiad hosted by Portugal, according to the Ministry of Education July 25.
Staged virtually July 18 to 22 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world’s largest annual biology contest for high school students involved 304 contestants from 76 countries, the MOE said.
Team Taiwan—which was led by 20 professors including Cheng Jiin-Tsuey of National Sun Yat-sen University’s Department of Biological Sciences in the southern metropolis of Kaohsiung—comprises Chi Liang-yun and Wu Jia-kai from National Chiayi Senior High School in southern Taiwan, Lin Wei-chen from Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School and Lin Zong-yi from Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei City, according to the MOE. To qualify, students must complete four rounds of competitions, with this year’s members selected after outperforming more than 5,000 of their peers, the ministry added.
Under the ministry’s incentive program for International Science Olympiad participants, the gold medal winners will each be awarded US$7,123. They also automatically qualify for admission to the biology department of any Taiwan university without needing to take an entrance examination.
Taiwan has taken home all golds seven times since the inaugural edition of the competition was held in 1990, garnering a total haul of 67 gold, 22 silver and 3 copper medals.
