MOFA welcomes staging of HFX Taipei in January 2022

2021/07/26

The decision by Washington-based Halifax International Security Forum (HFX) to stage HFX Taipei in January 2022 is welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs July 22.

Organized with Taipei City-headquartered Institute for National Defense and Security Research, the event is the U.S. think tank’s first major meeting in Asia, the MOFA said. It underscores the strength of support among democratic nations for Taiwan and its vibrant democracy, the ministry added.

HFX is widely recognized as a key global forum for democracies to discuss security issues and strengthen strategic cooperation, the MOFA said. In May, it awarded President Tsai Ing-wen the John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service for Taiwan’s achievements in combating COVID-19 and safeguarding democracy, the ministry added.

The MOFA will work closely with HFX and INDSR to ensure HFX Taipei’s success and promote cooperation with like-minded partners around the world in safeguarding freedom and democracy.

HFX President Peter Van Praagh said in a news release that the event celebrates the achievements and courage of Taiwan, as well as showcases the importance of fraternal solidarity at this challenging time. Great international interest is expected in the forum, he added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Great news! @INDSRTW & @HFXforum are teaming up to stage #HFXTaipei2022. The respected think tank’s 1st major meeting in #Asia represents a vote of confidence in #Taiwan & its freedom-loving people. Strategic cooperation is key to defending democracy & solving security issues.”
