Vice President Lai Ching-te received outgoing American Institute in Taiwan Director Brent Christensen at the Presidential Office July 12 in Taipei City, expressing the government’s gratitude for his contributions to fostering Taiwan-U.S. ties over the past three years.
According to Lai, relations between the two sides have gone from strength to strength under Christensen’s watch. This is evidenced by the passing of the Taiwan Travel Act and Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative Act, the U.S. government’s donation of 2.5 million Moderna COVID-19 vaccine doses, and the resumption of dialogue under the bilateral Trade and Investment Framework Agreement, he said.
These achievements reflect a shared belief in the values of democracy, freedom and human rights, as well as a firm respect for intellectual property rights and free trade, Lai said. The launch of the Global Cooperation and Training Framework and Indo-Pacific Democratic Governance Consultation also provide further opportunities for Taiwan and the U.S. to work together as forces for good in the world, he added.
As a token of friendship, Lai presented the official with a handcrafted fountain pen made of cypress wood from Tainan. It is sincerely hoped that Christensen will continue his support for Taiwan and return to the country to visit in the future, he said.
