Tsai presents Olympics flag, urges Team Taiwan to go for gold

2021/07/14

President Tsai Ing-wen presented the Olympics flag to Taiwan’s team for the Summer Games in Tokyo July 12 in the southern city of Kaohsiung, urging athletes to go for gold and represent the country with courage and honor.

The past two years have been hard on Team Taiwan as it trained rigorously while strictly adhering to COVID-19 management protocols, Tsai said. Such dedication and sacrifice for the chance to stand tall for the country on the international sporting stage is truly inspiring and sincerely appreciated by the government and people, she added.

Tsai made the remarks during a special ceremony at the National Sports Training Center. Others in attendance included Minister Without Portfolio Audrey Tang, who will lead Taiwan’s delegation to the games taking place July 23 to Aug. 8 in Japan.

According to Tsai, Taiwan’s athletes have been making great strides in recent major sporting events such as the Jakarta Palembang 2018 Asian Games and Taipei 2017 Summer Universiade. It is hoped this strong showing will continue in Tokyo, she added.

Tsai said athletes to keep a close eye on are Tai Tzu-ying, a top-ranked female badminton star; Kuo Hsing-chun, a world record-holding women’s weightlifter; and Lee Chih-kai, a champion male artistic gymnast in the pommel horse. They have the support of the people, and all eyes will be on them as they look to climb the podium at the Olympics, she added.

According to the Sports Administration under the Ministry of Education, 66 Taiwan athletes will contest 18 sports at the games. These include archery, boxing, cycling, golf, judo, swimming, table tennis, tennis and taekwondo.
