Taiwan tennis star Hsieh Su-wei wins third Wimbledon doubles trophy

Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens of Belgium won the women’s doubles title at the Wimbledon championships July 10 in London.
 
The duo defeated Elena Vesnina and Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in a 3-6, 7-5, 9-7 takedown spanning 2.5 hours. It is the pair’s fifth tournament together since partnering officially in May.
 
The victory is Hsieh’s third Wimbledon doubles trophy, having won the 2013 title with China’s Peng Shuai and the 2019 trophy alongside Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic. It was a first for Mertens, who has won two Grand Slam titles in women's doubles at the 2019 U.S. Open and 2021 Australian Open.
 
Speaking after the final, Hsieh said she and Mertens were able to persevere through the tough match thanks to the enthusiastic encouragement of the crowd. She also complimented her partner’s strong performance.
 
Mertens lauded Hsieh’s spectacular volleys, calling the Taiwan star a magician on the court and praising her unconventional playing style.
 
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA congratulated the pair: “Game, set & match! Brava to Hsieh Su-wei & @elise_mertens on overcoming @EVesnina001 & Veronika Kudermetova to win the #Wimbledon Ladies’ Doubles Trophy. You played your hearts out & did #Taiwan & #Belgium proud.”
 
Wimbledon is the world’s oldest tennis tournament and has been held at the All England Club in London since 1877.
