President Tsai Ing-wen received outgoing American Institute in Taiwan Director Brent Christensen at her official residence July 9 in Taipei City, expressing gratitude for his contributions to advancing Taiwan-U.S. relations over the nearly past three years.
Taiwan has been fortunate to have Christensen as head of the AIT at many key moments, Tsai said. These include the U.S. government’s donation of 2.5 million Moderna vaccine doses and resumption of dialogue under the bilateral Trade and Investment Framework Agreement, she added.
These achievements reflect both sides’ long-standing commitment to promoting the partnership. Christensen’s distinguished service has touched countless lives and made Taiwan a better place, Tsai said, adding that this dedication is sincerely appreciated by the government and people.
As a token of friendship, Tsai presented the official with a tableware set from Adisi Pottery—a renowned facility set up by a member of Taiwan’s indigenous Paiwan tribe from the southeastern county of Taitung. It is sincerely hoped the gift will remind Christensen of his time in country and also serves as an open invitation to return at anytime and visit, she said.
According to the Presidential Office, Tsai and Christensen also discussed matters like cybersecurity, economic and trade cooperation, regional security, Taiwan’s pandemic response and vaccine procurement. Other officials in attendance were Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and National Security Council Secretary-General Wellington Koo.
