The latest donation of 1.13 million COVID-19 vaccine doses from Japan touched down July 8 in Taiwan, underscoring the strength of the special friendship shared by the two sides, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At a time when vaccines are in short supply in many parts of the world, the shipment of AstraZeneca is greatly appreciated, the MOFA said. It will expand Taiwan’s inoculation coverage, enhance pandemic response measures and safeguard the health and well-being of the people, the ministry added.
According to the MOFA, the donation follows a shipment of 1.24 million AZ vaccine doses from Japan June 4. Such largesse is testament to the mutual care and support defining the bilateral relations, the ministry said.
This ongoing cooperation in combating COVID-19 is laying the foundations for expanded exchanges and a robust post-pandemic bounceback, the MOFA said. It is sincerely hoped the collaboration will enable the people of both sides to enjoy a quick return to everyday life, the ministry added.
Taiwan and Japan are like-minded partners and true friends sharing the fundamental values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, the MOFA said. The government cherishes its close and long-standing relationship with Japan, and will continue promoting two-way ties going forward, the ministry added.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “The latest donation of 1.13 million vaccine doses from #Japan has arrived safe & sound in #Taiwan! Our sincere gratitude to @moteging for the timely assistance enabling the country to continue staging its #COVID19 fightback. The support of a #RealFriend is truly treasured.”
