El Salvador’s Automobile Sales Grew 28% in 2011 Comparing to 2010

The data from the El Salvador Automobile Sales Association (ASALVE) indicates that 2011 is the year of recovery for the auto industry in El Salvador. The total auto sales reaches 9,321 units, a growth of 28% compared to the sales of 7,263 in 2010. However, when comparing to the year prior to the 2008 financial crisis, this number is still 46.56% less than the sales volume of 17,441 units in 2007. Vehicles sold in 2011 include motor homes, pickup trucks, SUVs and trucks. Of these, the most popular vehicles sold are the pickup trucks, which take 29% of the total sales volume. This type of vehicle has been the number one in sales for the seventh consecutive year. The second most popular vehicles are sedans with 23%; followed by SUVs with 17%; trucks with 15%; small buses with 7%; and then buses with 1%.
