Liudui Hakka Cultural Park calls for vintage Hakka photos

2021/07/07

Vintage photos of Hakka settlements in the Liudui region are sought by Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center’s Liudui Hakka Cultural Park, underscoring the government’s commitment to preserving the country’s unique heritage, according to the Cabinet-level Hakka Affairs Council June 30.

Selected images may be featured in future exhibitions at LHCP, the HAC said. Running until Nov. 30, the photo drive will offer a special souvenir from the park to the first 300 submissions, the council added.

As this year marks the 300th anniversary of the founding of Hakka outposts in Liudui, the center is looking to develop an archive of images documenting the region, THCDC said, adding that a commemorative exhibition is being organized to celebrate the occasion and facilitate deeper understanding of the area’s history among the public.

The name Liudui, meaning “six settlements,” originates from six Hakka garrisons formed in southern Taiwan in 1721 to protect local communities from the revolt against the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) led by Zhu Yi-gui. Today, Liudui consists of twelve districts and townships across Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County, namely Changzhi, Gaoshu, Jiadong, Jiaxian, Linluo, Liugui, Meinong, Neipu, Shanlin, Wanluan, Xinpi and Zhutian.
