Taiwan Cinema to kick off in Switzerland July 3

2021/07/01

Taiwan Cinema is set to open July 3 at Filmpodium in Zurich, offering Swiss audiences a selection of 20 iconic works spanning multiple genres and nearly four decades, according to the Ministry of Culture June 29.

Organized by the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany and Switzerland-based Tba Film Collective, the 11-week event promises to take cinephiles on a silver screen voyage giving insight into many of Taiwan’s historic events and social issues, the MOC said.

Standout titles by internationally celebrated Taiwan directors include “A City of Sadness” by Hou Hsiao-hsien, “In Our Time” by Edward Yang and “Pushing Hands” by Ang Lee, the MOC said. A talk by “God Man Dog” director Chen Singing will follow a screening of the film in September, the ministry added.

In a statement, the MOC said the successful coordination of the series is largely due to the dedicated efforts of Tba Film Collective curator Lorenzo Berardelli, who takes a keen interest in Taiwan productions. The screenings are expected to further raise the profile of homegrown cinema in Switzerland, the ministry added.

Filmpodium is a nonprofit cultural institution that shows about 350 films each year, exceeding the total sum screened by all commercial cinemas in Zurich.
