Honduras and Chile Signed Mining Cooperation Agreement

2012-01-30

Honduran Minister of Natural Resources (la Secretaría de Recursos Naturales y Ambiente, Serna), Mr. Rigoberto Cuéllar, who represented the Honduran government, signed a mining cooperation agreement with the Chilean government. The Vice Minister of Mines, Mr. Pablo Wagner, representing Chile, arrived in Honduras on Wednesday to sign the agreement and then visited the Honduran Minister of Presidency, Ms. Maria Antoniera. And, today he visited private mining companies in Santa Barbara. Honduras is rich in mineral deposits, however private enterprise lacks the technology to exploit these deposits, and relevant mining legislation is not complete. The major mining companies in Honduras are foreign companies, with Canadian companies having the highest presence. Honduras expects, with the help from Chile, to enhance Honduran mining capability.
