MOFA thanks EU, US leaders for supporting cross-strait peace, stability

2021/06/17

The EU-U.S. Summit Statement underscoring the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs June 16.

Issued by European Council President Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Joe Biden following a meeting the same day in Brussels, the statement highlights the importance democracies place on preserving regional peace and stability.

The statement comes two days after the Carbis Bay G-7 Communique released by the leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized nations urging the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues.

Similar sentiments were also expressed by the leaders of Australia, Japan and South Korea following summits with the EU and the U.S. between April and June, the MOFA said, adding that this underscores consensus on the issue among like-minded partners worldwide.

Given Taiwan’s pivotal position in the first island chain and front-line role in defending freedom, democracy and the rule of law, the country remains rock solid in fulfilling its obligations as a member of the international community in promoting peace, stability, prosperity and sustainable development throughout the Indo-Pacific, the MOFA said.

The government will keep cooperating with the U.S., EU, Japan and other partners and allies via platforms such as the Global Cooperation Training Framework in safeguarding democratic institutions, as well as international rules-based order, the MOFA added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “We welcome the #EUUS Summit Statement underscoring the importance of peace & stability across the Taiwan Strait, & encouraging the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues. #Taiwan will keep working with both sides for a free & open #IndoPacific.”
