President Tsai urges elderly to get vaccinated against COVID-19

2021/06/17

President Tsai Ing-wen urged eligible elderly residents to get vaccinated amid the government’s rollout of a mass COVID-19 immunization program June 15.

As senior citizens and patients with chronic conditions are especially vulnerable to coronavirus, they have been given priority in receiving vaccinations, Tsai said. The government is pulling out all stops in coordinating distribution of medical resources and equipment to reduce the severity of cases and lower the mortality rate, she added.

Tsai made the remarks during a special address livestreamed across multiple social media platforms from the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

The president took the opportunity to thank local governments, front-line workers and members of the public for their dedication to combating COVID-19. She also offered her gratitude to the private sector for donations of various medical supplies.

According to Tsai, qualified individuals are additionally encouraged to apply for COVID-19 subsidies under the recently announced relief program. With indoor dining temporarily banned under the countrywide level-three COVID-19 alert, residents are asked to support local restaurants by ordering delivery or takeout to help businesses survive the pandemic.

Cooperation is essential to mitigating the impact of coronavirus on communities, Tsai said, adding that solidarity plays a key role in strengthening disease-fighting efforts.
