The Carbis Bay communique issued Sunday by leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized nations stressing the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said June 14.
According to the MOFA, it is the first time the summit has included a statement of support for Taiwan in its communique since the establishment of the group in 1975. Heads of government from G-7 member states Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S., as well as the European Union, released the statement after gathering in Cornwall, England, to discuss global affairs.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Gratitude to the G7 leaders for underscoring the importance of peace & stability across the #Taiwan Strait, & encouraging the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues. Such 1st-time support in a summit communique is welcomed by the government & people.”
As a responsible Indo-Pacific country, Taiwan will continue to work with like-minded partners such as the G-7 and EU to deepen collaboration based on shared democratic principles, strengthen global supply chains, and protect regional peace, stability and prosperity, the ministry said.
