MOFA Minister Wu urges more cooperation among democracies in countering disinformation

Taiwan is committed to cooperating closely with like-minded partners in countering disinformation while defending the shared values of freedom and democracy, according to Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu June 9.
Ideological rivalry and strategic competition between democratic and authoritarian powers are on the rise, Wu said. The latter is waging cognitive warfare in an attempt to undermine free and open societies worldwide, he added.
Taiwan will continue leveraging its democratic institutions, digital technology, information transparency and good governance to check such campaigns of coercion, Wu said. It is critically important for the forces of good to share respective experiences and strengthen the global response to this scourge, he added.
Wu made the remarks via video link during the seventh Stratcom Summit staged by Prague-headquartered European Values Center for Security Policy. Accompanying speakers were Mantas Adomenas, vice foreign minister of Lithuania; Kadi Silde, undersecretary of national defense of Estonia; and Tomas Petricek, former foreign minister of the Czech Republic.
According to Wu, collaboration and solidarity are critical in building economic, social and political resilience to deter authoritarian aggression. Taiwan’s standing as a front-line bastion of freedom and democracy makes it a reliable and trustworthy member of the international community, he said.
Wu also took the opportunity to discuss the positive development of Taiwan-EU relations over the past few years. The government is working to deepen ties with Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Baltic states, he said, adding that it is hoped this produces fast-tracked negotiations on a bilateral investment agreement in the near future.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “How can democratic countries build resilience against #Disinformation? Minister Wu weighs in on this key issue along with @LithuaniaMFA Vice Minister Adomenas & @MoD_Estonia Undersecretary Silde during the @_EuropeanValues STRATCOM SUMMIT.”
