MOE, UCLA publish books on Taiwan’s indigenous people, cultures

2021/06/10

Two books spotlighting Taiwan’s indigenous people and cultures were co-published by the Ministry of Education and University of California, Los Angeles, according to the MOE June 7.

“Indigenous Peoples, Heritage and Landscape in the Asia Pacific: Knowledge Co-Production and Empowerment” and “Indigenous Knowledge in Taiwan and Beyond” represent fruitful research and conferences supported by the Taiwan Studies Program—a cooperative initiative of the MOE and UCLA’s Asia Pacific Center.

The first title compiles the results of the Taiwan Indigenous Landscape and History Project implemented by Taipei City-based National Taiwan University and National Chengchi University in conjunction with the center. It saw academics carry out an archaeological survey focused on the Atayal community in Sqoyaw village of Taichung City’s Heping District, central Taiwan.

The second title showcases leading-edge humanistic and social science research related to Sinophone communities and cultures in Taiwan and around the world. It involved Taichung-headquartered National Chung Hsing University, and is the first release in the TSP-center series.

According to the MOE, the 2014-established TSP aims to deepen understanding of Taiwan’s indigenous communities and links to regional island cultures through archaeological and historical studies. In February, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs partnered with UCLA in setting up the Taiwan in the World program and a Taiwan Studies Endowment Fund to guarantee long-term backing of the TSP.
