Tsai urges maximum COVID-19 vigilance during Taiwan’s Dragon Boat Festival
2021/06/09
President Tsai Ing-wen said June 7 that the people must maintain maximum COVID-19 vigilance during the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival so as not to weaken Taiwan’s pandemic fightback.
Medical resources are effectively utilized and the public is making an important contribution by staying home on the weekends, Tsai said. This collaborative approach is combating coronavirus and resulting in a reduction of daily confirmed cases, she added.
According to Tsai, the Dragon Boat Festival taking place June 14 this year is no excuse for COVID-19 complacency. The people are reminded to celebrate the annual family gathering with full respect for the health of loved ones by avoiding unnecessary travel, she said.
The seriousness of this situation is illustrated by the extension of the Central Epidemic Command Center’s level three warning until June 28, Tsai said, adding that a raft of supplementary measures will be implemented by central and local governments.
At the same time, Tsai said, the government is finalizing plans for mass vaccinations in Taiwan and will make a related announcement in the near term. The donation of 1.24 million and 750,000 vaccine doses by Japan and the U.S., respectively, is a strong step in the right direction and sincerely appreciated by the government and people, she added
Tsai said the pandemic is a test of society’s ability to stand firm and tackle the resulting challenges head on. Taiwan has faced hard times in the past, but always prevails on the strength of the people’s perseverance and resilience, she added.
