2021/06/03
The space development act passed final reading May 31 in Taiwan’s Legislature, laying the foundation for the public and private sectors to fast-track advancement of related next-generation technologies.
Comprising 22 articles in six chapters, the act covers activities such as registration of launch and space vehicles; approval of launch projects; establishment, operation and management of launch sites; and use of data obtained during missions.
The act also outlines Taiwan’s principles for space development. These include conforming to international laws and regulations; ensuring environmental protection and sustainability; protecting the rights and interests of indigenous tribes; and safeguarding national security and information transparency.
According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the act is in lockstep with the objectives of the six core strategic industries initiative. It ensures Taiwan’s economic and technological progress, national security and well-being of the people, the MOST said.
The act further satisfies a U.N. call for countries to adopt rules of behavior in space, as well as underscores the government’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations as a responsible member of the global community, the MOST added.
Unveiled by President Tsai Ing-wen during her inauguration address in May 2020, the initiative comprises information and digital technology; cybersecurity; biotech and medical technology; national defense; green and renewable energy; and strategic stockpile industries.
