Taiwan, Guatemala ink pact on AEO mutual recognition

An arrangement to mutually recognize Authorized Economic Operator certifications between Taiwan and Guatemala was signed virtually May 28, underscoring the two countries’ commitment to strengthening trade ties, the Customs Administration under the Ministry of Finance said.
 
Under the pact concluded by CA Director-general Hsieh Ling-yuan and Superintendent Marco Livio Diaz of Guatemala’s Superintendency of Tax Administration, companies awarded AEO status in either country can enjoy fast-tracked customs clearance at both borders, the CA said.
 
Other high-profile participants in the ceremony included Guatemala Customs Intendant Werner Ovalle and ROC (Taiwan) Ambassador to Guatemala Cheng Li-cheng. 
 
According to the CA, Guatemala is an important Central American ally of Taiwan, as evidenced by the two sides’ free trade agreement and a raft of completed and ongoing bilateral projects. The new arrangement is expected to significantly enhance the competitiveness of AEO exporters from both countries while promoting just-in-time and zero-inventory logistics management and ensuring supply chain security, the CA added.
 
Since the implementation of Taiwan’s AEO program in December 2009, 807 companies have been granted accreditation, including 426 general enterprises and 381 safety and security firms together accounting for 48 percent of the country’s total trade. The CA has signed AEO mutual recognition arrangements with eight other countries, namely Australia, India, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and the U.S.
