MOFA thanks diplomatic allies for supporting Taiwan at WHA

Backing for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly from the Kingdom of Eswatini, Marshall Islands, Nauru and St. Vincent and Grenadines is deeply appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs May 25.
 
Representatives of the four diplomatic allies spoke up for Taiwan during the two-on-two debates during the General Committee and plenary session held on day one of the 74th WHA, which is taking place virtually May 24 to June 1, the MOFA said.
 
According to the ministry, the allies called Taiwan’s inclusion in the World Health Organization essential to eliminating gaps in the public health network and ensuring global health security.
 
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to escalate, Health For All is only possible if the WHO is truly committed to its promise to Leave No One Behind, the MOFA said. The U.N. body is urged to restore Taiwan’s observer status and include the country in its activities, mechanisms and meetings in order to effectively to bring the spread of the virus under control, the MOFA added.


Strong backing from the international community underscores the legitimacy and urgency of Taiwan’s WHO inclusion, the ministry said, adding that the government will continue to seek meaningful engagement in the U.N. agency while ensuring the right of its 23 million people to take part in global health-related activities.
