Support from allies and like-minded partners in the Caribbean and Latin America for Taiwan’s bid to participate in the activities, mechanisms and meetings of the World Health Organization is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs May 24.
As the 74th World Health Assembly opened virtually on Monday, a total of 700 lawmakers from 21 Caribbean and Latin American countries voiced their support for Taiwan’s participation in the decision-making body of the WHO, the MOFA said.
Realizing Health For All is only possible if Taiwan is included in the international health governance system, the group said, adding that the country’s knowledge and experience combating coronavirus can prove invaluable to the global community.
Leaders, parliamentarians, representatives and groups speaking in support of Taiwan include St. Lucia Prime Minister Allen Chastanet; Paraguay Senator Arnaldo Franco; Belize President of the Senate Carolyn Trench Sandiford; President of the ROC (Taiwan)-Nicaragua Parliamentary Group of Friendship Jose Figueroa; Guatemala Deputy and President of the Foreign Relations Commission of Congress Manuel Conde Orellana; St. Vincent and the Grenadines PM Ralph Gonsalves; St. Kitts and Nevis PM Timothy Harris; the National Congress of Honduras; the Central American Parliament; and the Formosa Club chapters in the Caribbean and Latin America.
Taiwan is a responsible member of the international community and a force for good in the world, the MOFA said, adding the government will continue working alongside its allies and like-minded partners to tackle the challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
