President Tsai Ing-wen said May 20 that the government is leaving no stone unturned in striving to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Taiwan with the dedicated help of the country’s armed forces, according to the Presidential Office.
The president praised Taiwan’s military officers and soldiers for their contributions to the country’s enhanced epidemic prevention measures rolled out in response to a surge in local case numbers. Their support has been a great source of reassurance to the people, she said.
Tsai made the remarks during a visit to the National Armed Forces Epidemic Command Center in Taipei City.
Since the pandemic alert has been raised to level 3 countrywide, military personnel are assisting with relevant disease prevention measures, with the ROC (Taiwan) army’s Chemical Corps Division conducting disinfection missions, Taipei-based Tri-Service General Hospital dispatching personnel to help with expanded testing and the Armaments Bureau under the Ministry of National Defense helping set up quarantine centers, Tsai said.
Despite the ongoing pandemic, fighter jets and naval vessels from China have continued to encroach into the country’s airspace and territorial waters, the president said, adding that the armed forces have been instructed to stay vigilant in monitoring incursions of any kind.
As commander in chief, Tsai offered her gratitude to service personnel for their tireless efforts in ensuring national security.
Latest CECC statistics reveal 3,139 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 1,980 domestic cases and 1,106 imported cases, and 15 deaths.
