The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the launch of Formosa Club in the Caribbean May 14, thanking members for their pledge to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the international governance system, including the World Health Organization.
The livestreamed ceremony involved Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, Vice Foreign Minister Miguel Li-jey Tsao and a selection of lawmakers from five countries who have joined the grouping.
In a recorded message, MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said the goal of the Formosa Club is to call on parliamentarians around the world who share the values of freedom, democracy and human rights to enter into mutually beneficial dialogue and work together to adapt to an ever-changing global environment.
Echoing Wu’s remarks, Tsao took the opportunity to express the government’s gratitude for the lawmakers’ staunch support.
Other high-profile participants included Mark A. G. Brantley, minister of foreign affairs and aviation for St. Kitts and Nevis and premier of Nevis; Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Valerie Woods, speaker of Belize’s House of Representatives; and parliamentarians Sarah Flood-Beaubrun of St. Lucia as well as Pierre Francois Sildor of Haiti.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “Vice Minister Tsao proudly launched #FormosaClub #Caribbean. The near 100-strong group of lawmakers from #Belize, #Haiti, #StKittsAndNevis, #StLucia & #StVincentAndTheGrenadines are forces for good cooperating closely with #Taiwan in building better futures for all.”
The Formosa Club in the Caribbean complements chapters successfully opened in Africa, Europe, the Indo-Pacific, Latin America and West Asia. It is expected to join the others in speaking on behalf of Taiwan in the international arena, according to the MOFA.
