A resolution passed by the Foreign Affairs Committee of Slovakia’s National Council supporting the participation of Taiwan in the World Health Assembly is appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs May 11.
Proposed by FAC Chair Marian Kery in the lead-up to the 74th WHA taking place virtually May 24 to June 1, the resolution commends Taiwan for its success in combating COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, the MOFA said. It also highlights the country’s commitment to realizing the World Health Organization’s vision of Health for All, the ministry added.
In addition, FAC Vice Chair Peter Osusky and other members of the National Council publicly backed Taiwan’s WHA bid, the MOFA said. These actions demonstrate Slovakia’s support for Taiwan and the continuing development of the two sides’ partnership, the ministry added.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “We welcome the Foreign Affairs Committee of #Slovakia’s National Council passing a resolution urging #Taiwan’s #WHA74 participation. The 1st-time gesture recognizes #TaiwanCanHelp bolster global health & reaffirms robust relations between our country & the #EU member state.”
The WHA is the decision-making body of the WHO. It is attended by delegations from all member states of the U.N. specialized agency and focuses on a specific health agenda prepared by the executive board.
