The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its sincere gratitude to the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee and Senate Committee on Foreign Relations April 28 for initiating a global social media campaign supporting Taiwan’s participation in the 74th World Health Assembly.
According to the MOFA, for 48 hours beginning 10 p.m. April 27 Taipei time, congressional members from democratic countries around the world are joining with an international cross-party grouping of parliamentarians to voice their support for Taiwan’s attendance at the WHA.
Using the hashtag #LetTaiwanHelp on social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook, the country’s allies and like-minded partners are banding together to urge the World Health Organization to invite Taiwan to the annual meeting of its decision-making body set to be held virtually May 24 to June 1.
The MOFA said the creative approach is highly appreciated by the government and people, adding that it reflects a consensus among legislative bodies worldwide that Taiwan needs to be included in the global public health network.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “The avalanche of support for #Taiwan’s 's participation in the @WHO & meetings such as #WHA74 proves beyond a shadow of a doubt it’s high time for @DrTedros to #LetTaiwanHelp. Our gratitude to friends from democracies worldwide for recognizing #TaiwanCanHelp realize #HealthForAll.”
The WHO should respond to the call and facilitate Taiwan’s full participation in all related activities, mechanisms and meetings, the MOFA said. The government remains committed to working alongside other countries to address the challenges posed by COVID-19 as well as to speed the global recovery from the pandemic, the ministry added.
